29 November every year is International Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) Day. A day to celebrate and thank women who defend human rights, and all people who defend the rights of women and girls. It is also a day to hold States accountable for protecting the rights of women, to protect and promote human rights.
As part of activities to end gender based violence tagged “16 Days of activism” Mediatrix Field Office Ogoja Cross River State on this day organized an advocacy plan with Film Show of the documentary “FROM FEAR TO FREEDOM, ENDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN” by Deb Bergeron, followed by the movie “DRY” by Stehenie Okereke for members of the refugee communities in Ogoja.
While some cultural violence against women is socially approved, women continue to be subjected to unequal treatment under the law.
Worldwide at least one 1 in 3 women are victims of violence; it is the most pervasive human right violation on earth, present in every country, religion, culture and class.
Cultural and religious practices still promote and encourage gender based violence and there is continuous damage inflicted on women and girls every day ranging from Money marriage, child marriage and abuse, domestic violence, rape, honor killings etc.
The movie and documentary speaks to the ills suffered by women all over the world and how it can be stopped.
Violence of any form is a crime and anyone can be a victim no matter where we are. The first action we can take is to speak up. Together we can end violence against women and girls.
