Welcome to MDF. We're on a mission to To improve the lives of the people by reducing the burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases and social inequalities affecting orphans, vulnerable children, women and the elderly in Cross River State. The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

On the 17th of October 2024, the grounds of Government Secondary School Akim in Calabar, Cross River State, were filled with a buzz of excitement as students and teachers eagerly anticipated the special event celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child. This year, the YouCan-B Initiative, in partnership with Mediatrix Development Foundation and other NGO’s in Calabar, brought the celebration to life with a meaningful program aimed at empowering and inspiring the young girls of the school.

Upon arrival, the team was warmly welcomed by the Vice Principal, Sir Victor Bassey, whose enthusiasm set the tone for the day. He expressed his delight in having the event hosted at the school, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to supporting initiatives that enrich the students’ learning experiences. With a broad smile, he assured the guests that the school would always be open to future collaborations that benefit its students.

The event kicked off with an opening prayer, setting a reflective and positive mood. Madam Blessing Alim, the Executive Director of YouCan-B Initiative and an alumna of the school, took the stage for her opening remarks. She spoke with fondness and pride about her journey, attributing her current achievements to the solid foundation laid by her teachers at Government Secondary School Akim. With deep gratitude, she recalled all teachers who never relented in pushing her and her peers to excel, reminding the girls present that the seeds of success are planted through perseverance and the support of dedicated mentors.

The Vice Principal followed up with his own words of encouragement, reaffirming the school’s readiness to support the students in any capacity. He commended the efforts of both YouCan-B Initiative, Mediatrix Development Foundation and other NGO's for choosing to celebrate this special day at their school.

What followed was a vibrant series of activities designed to both entertain and educate the students. The students participated enthusiastically in a quiz competition, showcasing their knowledge and teamwork. Laughter echoed through the school as a comedy segment lightened the mood, while a dance performance brought everyone to their feet.

As the event drew to a close, the organizers made sure to leave the girls with more than just memories. Sanitary pads and books were distributed to the students, a small yet impactful gesture aimed at supporting their health and education. Refreshments were also shared, adding a celebratory touch to the day.

In a final, heartfelt moment, awards were given to the teachers who had recently gone above and beyond in their dedication to the success of their students. Their tireless efforts were recognized, reminding everyone present that the role of a teacher extends far beyond the classroom—it shapes futures.
