FLAC is a coalition of past and present First Ladies with the mandate of advocating to increasing awareness, access to cancer care, and influence policy reforms in Nigeria with the collective aim of reducing cancer burden in the country. The purpose of the Workshop is to raise awareness on the HPV vaccination rolling out for the girl child aged 9-14years from the 25th September, 2023 in 16 selected States in Nigeria as phase one of the intervention. Eligibility criteria was based on key indicators by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA). Interestingly, the second phase of the HPV vaccine introduction shall commence in February 2024 to cover the remaining 21 States not earlier selected including Cross River State.
HPV is an infection that causes warts in various parts of the body, depending on the strain. HPV is the most commonly sexually transmitted infection (STI) leading to cancer of the Cervix among women. HPV spreads by having unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex. By mother to baby by pregnancy, labor, or nursing and infecting more than 1.5million cases every year in Nigeria.
In attendance were the wife of the former Governor of Cross River State, Dr. (Mrs.) Linda Ayade and the Wife of the Governor of Katsina State Hajiya Fatima Dikko Radda. Who presented certificates of participation to participants, urges them to go back to their different States with aggression as HPV vaccine advocates & champions to fight this deadly disease called Cervical Cancer.
The workshop was facilitated by FLAC with technical support from Medicaid, NPHCDA, International Vaccine Access Centre (IVAC), Roche and other resource persons. The event was educating, innovating and inspiring.
